about

One Great Big World Community is a song to help teach positive communication skills to children and youth.

Informed by simple communication techniques, taught by family education specialist Susan West, an accompanying songbook (available through www.blurb.com/b/9396445-one-great-big-world-community) includes questions and activities to help parents, or staff and volunteers in schools and youth-serving organizations, use the song to help share these skills with children and youth. The role plays and discussion questions included for each verse of the song can be adapted for various ages and learning abilities.

lyrics

One Great Big World Community

Let’s make up some rules so we can
all live together, all live together, all live together.
Let’s make up some rules so we can
all live together in this great big world community!

How ‘bout when you are speaking
well, then, I will be listening,
I will be listening, I will be listening.
Then when I am speaking, it is your turn to listen
in this great big world community!

If I don’t understand you, then
I’ll ask you a question,
I’ll ask you a question, I’ll ask you a question.
If I don’t understand you,
then I’ll ask you a question
in this great big world community.

Sometimes I won’t agree, but I’ll
respect your opinion,
respect your opinion, respect your opinion.
Sometimes I won’t agree,
but I’ll respect your opinion,
in this great big world community.

I won’t assume you know my thoughts,
so I’ll say my feelings,
I’ll say my feelings, I’ll say my feelings.
And don’t assume I know yours too,
so tell me your feelings
in this great big world community.

I’ll be thoughtful with the words I choose
to say what I’m feeling,
to say what I’m feeling, to say what I’m feeling.
I won’t use words to hurt you
when I say what I’m feeling
in this great big world community.

Like, I’ll call you by your name
and I will not be a bully,
I’ll not be a bully, I’ll not be a bully.
“Sticks and stones can break my bones,
and names CAN hurt me”
in this great big world community.

We all have a special gift each one like no other,
each one like no other, each one like no other.
I will use my special gift that’s like no other
to build one great big world community!
