Lipid Blues

Another selection from "Kids Songs ... a la carte", Lipid Blues hopes to inspire people to choose healthier, whole foods, such as whole grains, fruits and veggies most of the time, and to be more physically active. The health educator in me needs to include the explanation that lipids, which is another term for fats, have “concentrated calories” – they come in at a whopping 9 calories a gram, as opposed to proteins and carbohydrates that have only 4 calories per gram (and we can’t forget alcohol, which has 7 calories per gram!). It’s written in “bluesy” minor key to further illustrate the message.

Now fat supplies concentrated calories
And, it’s true, we need fat, too.
But, keep in mind the rule is moderation
With nine calories a gram just a little will do!
