Restless Heart

Over the years the process of crafting a song has given me all the evidence I need that we have access to the wisdom of close friends and family even after they have passed on. As it happened, “Restless Heart” was written on Memorial Day in remembrance of a close friend just after his early death from cancer. It was inspired by the lyrics of a song that he wrote for his mother:

…May I ask you where you’re going
May I ask you where you’ve been
May I ask you what you’re doing
May I ask you what you’ve seen
May I ask you what you know
Have you far to go
If so, tell me where and I can sing you there.

Her answer was in her poem, “Epitaph,” which she wrote before she died:

…Oh, do not sing me far away – sing me near.
