Sand Castles

Goose Rocks Beach in Kennebunkport, Maine is a favorite childhood vacation place where my brothers and sisters and I would build sand castles or anything else for the imagining. As an adult now I think about how important it is to provide solid foundations, rather than "castles in the sand," for our children – strong values, traditions and beliefs that will stand up against any wave of pressure, conflict or threat. It has to start with us; it is our legacy for future generations.

There are children building a castle on the Earth’s ancient shore,
building a fortress to last through the centuries of war.
But for all their skill and labor, despite their best made plans,
the tide comes in and the fortress returns to tiny grains of sand.

There are children looking for heroes in this world to restore
a presence of hope for the fearful, for those who have borne
the despair of indifference caused by some cruel “slight of hand.”
