The Sower and the Seeds

There’s a story ’bout Jesus
when he sat beside the sea –
how a great crowd had gathered
to seek his company.
In order to teach them,
so that they all might see,
he got into a boat, and said,
“Listen to me!”

“A Sower went out sowing,
and, as he sowed the seeds,
some fell on the pathway;
birds snatched them up like thieves.
Still some of the seed, well,
it fell on rocky ground.
But the seedlings they all withered
when the morning sun came ‘round.

“As the Sower kept sowing,
some fell among the thorns,
the thorns grew around them
and choked them, one by one.
But, finally, the Sower,
he found a fertile field,
and some thirty, some sixty,
some one hundred fold the yield.”

His disciples they asked him
why parables he gave.
“The reason is, in seeing,
that they do not perceive;
in hearing they won’t listen,
nor do they comprehend.
But to you it has been given,
only you will understand.”

Then he told them Isaiah
foretold it long ago:
“Indeed you will listen,
but you will never know,
Your eyes will behold it,
but you will never see.
Oh, would that they hear within their hearts
and turn, turn to me!”

But blessed are the eyes
of the faithful for they see,
and blessed are the humble,
they hear with certainty
the promise of the Sower,
of the Kingdom that has come,
as he gathers up the wheat
and he saves it in his barn.
